Review HOHNER Extreme Bending Hole Diatonic Harmonica Ex Bud Boblink Key

The Hohner XB-40 Extreme Bending 10-hole Diatonic Harmonica in the key of C, also known as the "Buddy Guy Signature Series," is a must-have instrument for harmonica players looking to explore the outer limits of their musical expression. This harmonica, endorsed by the legendary blues artist Buddy Guy, is a remarkable instrumental device meticulously engineered by Hohner, the world's oldest and most respected harmonica manufacturer.

The XB-40 harmonica boasts several distinctive features, setting it apart from traditional diatonic harmonicas. Its ten holes are ergonomically designed, carefully positioned to allow for greater ease and comfort in play. Unlike standard harmonicas with fixed comb and reed plates, the XB-40 benefits from Hohner's revolutionary bendable reed plates, a testament to the manufacturer's unwavering commitment to innovation. The flexibility of these reed plates offers an unprecedented level of control and precision for advanced bending techniques, granting players the ability to produce vibrant, rich, and expressive blues, soul, and rock sounds.

The XB-40's airtight construction ensures consistent tone and response, with every note ringing true regardless of the air pressure applied. This eliminates the issue of "wheezing" or inconsistent volume often experienced with lesser harmonicas. The harmonica's covers are made from a robust, high-impact plastic material, making it resilient against wear and tear.

Measuring 3.7 inches long and 1.6 inches wide, the Hohner XB-40 Extreme Bending 10-hole Diatonic Harmonica is a versatile accompaniment for various musical genres, suitable for both novice and professional musicians. With its distinctive sound and unrivaled bending capabilities, it caters to those seeking to broaden their musical horizons or aiming to master the art of blues harmonica playing. Experience the revolutionary power of the XB-40 and take your harmonica playing to new heights.

The Hohner XB-40 Extreme Bending 10-hole Diatonic Harmonica in the key of C by Hohner is a popular choice among harmonica players, especially those who play blues and other genres that require a bending capability beyond the standard diatonic harps. Here's a list of pros and cons to help you make an informed decision about purchasing this harmonica:

Pros:

1. High-quality construction: The Hohner XB-40 is made with a high-quality brass body and nickel covers, ensuring durability and a rich, full tone.

2. Extreme bending capability: This harmonica allows for pitch bending up to a whole step, making it ideal for playing blues and other genres that require a more expressive sound.

3. Good airflow: The XB-40 has a slightly larger comb than traditional diatonic harmonicas, allowing for easier and more efficient breathing.

4. Consistent reed response: The reeds on the XB-40 are carefully designed to provide consistent response across all holes and positions, making it easier to play complex chords and progressions.

5. Versatile: The XB-40 is a diatonic harmonica in the key of C, making it a versatile instrument that can be used to play a wide range of music styles.

Cons:

1. Price: The Hohner XB-40 is more expensive than some other diatonic harmonicas, making it a potential drawback for budget-conscious musicians.

2. Learning curve: The extreme bending capability of the XB-40 requires a fair amount of practice and skill to master, making it less suitable for beginners.

3. Limited bends: While the XB-40 allows for up to a whole step bend, it doesn't offer the same degree of control as a chromatic harmonica.

4. Size: The XB-40 is slightly larger than a standard diatonic harmonica, which may make it less convenient for some players.

5. Requires maintenance: As with any harmonica, the XB-40 requires regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance, including oiling the reeds and cleaning the comb and covers.

Conclusion:

The Hohner XB-40 Extreme Bending 10-hole Diatonic Harmonica is a high-quality instrument that offers advanced bending capabilities and a rich, full tone. It's ideal for players who require a more expressive sound, particularly in blues and other genres. However, it comes with a higher price tag and a steeper learning curve compared to standard diatonic harmonicas, and may not be suitable for beginners or those who don't need the extreme bending capacity.

Recommendation:

If you're a harmonica player looking to take your sound to the next level and have the budget and skill level for it, the Hohner XB-40 is definitely worth considering. However, if you're a beginner or just starting out, a standard diatonic harmonica in the key of C may be a better option. Consider practicing on a standard harmonica for a while and gradually working your way up to the XB-40 as your skills develop.

Details:

I treated all reed plates with naval jelly to remove dirt and oxidation then used a brass wire brush scrub the plates clean disinfect them. Please review the photos be sure to zoom in on them and bid with enthusiasm. This harmonica belonged to the late bud boblink and is directly from his estate. This offer includes the Hohner plastic case pictured.

I tuned the harmonica to 442. I always include photos with the covers removed so that you can look under hood to see what you re really getting. Please see my other harmonica offers.

I replaced any wind savers valves that showed damage with nos valves. Following that I cleaned the plates with dawn detergent to neutralize naval jelly. I adjusted the gap, profile and centering of each reed to ensure reliable playing. I polished the nickel-plated covers and completed assembly.
